At their last meeting the Texas Aggie CattleWomen were able to have Mrs. Jill Ginn come in and be a guest speaker. This was a very exciting meeting for the girls as it was the last meeting they were able to have before the annual Spring meeting at the Texas Southwestern Cattle Raisers convention (TSCRA). This was a perfect meeting for Jill because she spoke to the girls about the positive benefits of networking and how beneficial being a CattleWomen can be for you.
Jill had a lot of great things to say and she has an amazing story as well. Jill is truly an inspiration for someone like me. I did not grow up raising cattle, but I got into the industry as fast as I could. Networking is really important, there is no if ands or buts around it. You may be the hardest and the best worker around but sometimes it takes knowing the right people as well. One of the best pieces of advice that she gave was, “The business building “GOLD” is not in collecting business cards, but in the solid relationships you build.” Just because you hand out those business cards and tell people your name does not mean that you are a shoe in. It will be difficult to be remembered unless you learn to build a relationship with that contact. Jill also added, “If you want to go somewhere, it is best to find someone who has already been there.” This is huge! Just take a step back and let this sink in. While you are thinking about that, think about all of the CattleWomen affiliations and all the influential people we have in our organization. This is a great place to start! We have all walks of life in our organization and we are always willing to help!
Besides networking, you have to be able to nail that elevator speech. What is an elevator speech you ask? It is a one minute introduction about yourself that draws people in wanted to learn more. Close to 33% of bosses said they knew within 90 seconds of speaking to someone if they were going to hire them or not. This not only includes the words that are coming out of your mouth, but also the non-verbal cues that you are giving along with your appearance and confidence. Believe it or not, some bosses said that clothing could be used as a deciding factor when it comes to deciding between two candidates. Some important non-verbal cues that need to be taken into consideration would be; Your handshake, eye contact, your smile (or lack thereof), and the knowledge you have of the company. If you are planning to attend TSCRA this weekend to possibly find a job, make sure to keep these things in mind.
CattleWomen has played an important role for me and Jill highlighted this during her talk as well. I have met some amazing women in this organization and they have done nothing but support me from the very beginning. They have believed in me even when I doubted myself. There were some inspirational quotes that Jill showed us at the end of her presentation that were pretty powerful, but this one really hit home. “Call it a CLAN. Call it a NETWORK. Call it a TRIBE. Call it a FAMILY. Whatever you call it or whoever you are…….. YOU NEED ONE.” This is so very true and I am so thankful to be able to call CattleWomen my Tribe. I could not ask for a better one! I am looking forward to many more years filled with great memories with these wonderful ladies! God really blessed me when I took the courage to stumble into that first Texas Aggie CattleWomen meeting.
